Bring a branding and headshot photographer I'm frequently asked how often should you update your headshots and branding photos. It really depends on your brand and career! Some industries and personal brands need constant updates, while others can wait a bit longer between shoots. If you’re wondering where you fall on this spectrum, let’s break it down so you can make sure you're staying ahead of the game.

The Power of a Fresh Headshot

Your headshot is often the first thing people see when they look you up online, so it’s essential to keep it fresh and updated. As a Columbus headshot photographer and Columbus branding photographer, I’m here to guide you on when it’s time for a refresh and how you can use those images to make a lasting impression.

First things first, how often should you update your headshot? The answer can vary:

  1. Quarterly Refresh: If you’re a business or brand that is active on social media and has a significant online presence, you may need to update your headshots and branding photos every three months. Fresh content is key to keeping your audience engaged. Brands that rely on visuals to build trust and connection will benefit from frequent updates. In some cases, a new session every 6 weeks can make all the difference, especially if you’re rolling out seasonal campaigns or working on a social media-heavy strategy.

  2. Every 6-12 Months: For those who aren't posting fresh content every day or are in corporate roles, a refresh every 6 months to a year can be perfectly fine. This ensures your look remains current, especially if you’ve had a change in hairstyle, weight, or overall aesthetic. Also, if your job involves meeting new clients, potential employers, or speaking at events, you want to ensure your photos reflect the real, present-day you!

  3. Strategize for 2025: My favorite way to help clients plan is by mapping out all of their digital and print marketing goals for the year ahead. Planning for 2025 now can help you see where your headshots and branding photos fit in your overall marketing strategy.

Using Your Headshots and Branding Photos

Most people think their headshots or branding photos are just for Instagram or their website, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg! Here are some creative and impactful ways my clients at Claudine Kosier Photography have used their photos:

  • Larger Than Life: Want to make a bold statement? Think car wraps, life-size cutouts, or even a billboard featuring your headshot! These larger-than-life marketing tactics help you stand out in a big way, especially at events or around your city.
  • Books and Magazines: Are you an author, speaker, or expert in your field? Use your headshot on your book cover, as a contributor photo, or even as the featured image in an article. Your headshot is a key part of your personal brand and should reflect the expert that you are!
  • Presentations & Performances: For those who speak, perform, or engage with audiences regularly, having a variety of headshots—ranging from professional and polished to expressive and energetic—will help you connect better with different audiences. Your bio pic for a formal event might be different from the photo you use on social media, where a bit more personality can shine through.
  • Websites & Brochures: Your website is often the first place people visit to learn about you, so make sure your images are current and aligned with your brand’s message. Consider photos that show you in action—whether that’s an environmental portrait in your workspace, a shot of you interacting with clients, or even a group/team shot that highlights your business culture.
  • Social Media: Platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram rely heavily on visuals, so it's important to mix up your profile photo and cover images to keep things fresh and on-brand. Use expression shots to showcase different sides of your personality, or try flat lays of your tools for an interesting behind-the-scenes glimpse into your work.
