Okay I have to talk about Riya because this session was SO good and I need you to see these images.
Some seniors warm up slowly. They come in a little quiet, loosen up halfway through, and by the end they're having fun. That's totally normal and I love watching it happen.
Riya was not that. Riya showed up already on fire. Vibrant, engaged, laughing, completely herself from the very first frame. That kind of energy is genuinely rare and when I get a senior like that, I just try to keep up and not get in the way.
We started at Quarry Trails Metro Park on the west side of Columbus and then moved into the urban area of the park. The afternoon light shifted, and we finished with a surprise appearance from her dog Sheldon that honestly made the whole session even better. If you're a mom reading this trying to picture what a senior portrait session actually looks like when everything goes right, this is it.
Is Quarry Trails Metro Park good for senior pictures in Columbus Ohio? It is one of the most underrated senior portrait locations in the entire city. The old quarry walls and natural waterfall create a backdrop you genuinely cannot find anywhere else in Columbus, and the surrounding wildflower meadow gives you a completely different feel within the same session. If your senior wants something that looks nothing like every other Columbus senior portrait, Quarry Trails needs to be on your list.
Most people know Quarry Trails as a hiking and biking destination. From a photography standpoint it is something else entirely.
The old quarry walls are dramatic and textured in a way that photographs unlike anything else in Central Ohio. There is a natural waterfall tucked into the rock that catches the afternoon light and makes every single image look like it belongs in a magazine. And then just steps away you have open meadow areas full of wildflowers and tall golden grasses that are soft and dreamy and completely different in feel.
That kind of variety within one location is rare. You can go from moody and dramatic at the quarry walls to soft and golden in the wildflowers without ever getting back in your car. For a session like Riya's, that range is everything.
We started at the quarry waterfall and I'm just going to say it: that first location does a lot of the work for you. Riya in a white sundress, long dark hair, leaning against a tree with that stone wall and waterfall behind her? That's a wall portrait and we had been shooting for maybe eight minutes.
From there we moved into the wildflower meadow near the pedestrian bridge and that's where things really took off. She had a burgundy lace crop top with white wide-leg pants and the combination of that deep red against the golden afternoon light and the white wildflowers was genuinely stunning. She was moving, laughing, completely in her element, and you can feel all of it in the images.
Then Sheldon showed up.
Her little white fluffy dog trotted in mid-session and immediately became the co-star. We grabbed images of the two of them in the small urban stretch and I'm obsessed with how they turned out. Riya in a chocolate brown mini dress leaning against a glass storefront with her own reflection behind her, and then Sheldon tucked into her arms while she's in a cozy cream sweater. Two completely different looks, two completely different vibes, both absolutely her.
Four looks and every single one was thought out. White sundress at the waterfall. Burgundy lace top with white wide-leg pants in the wildflowers. Chocolate brown strapless mini with a ruffled skirt downtown. Cream fuzzy sweater with a brown mini skirt for the Sheldon portion at the end.
The range she brought is the reason her gallery has so much variety. Soft and dreamy, bold and colorful, editorial and confident, cozy and fun. There's an image for every occasion in there, from a framed wall portrait to a graduation announcement to an Instagram post she'll actually want to share.
That doesn't happen by accident. It happens when a senior comes prepared and we plan the session around giving her real variety from the start.
The urban portion gave us something the park couldn't: that editorial, confident, city energy that plays so well against the softer natural images from Quarry Trails. Together they tell a fuller story. That's exactly what a great senior portrait session should do.
If your daughter is anything like Riya, she is going to have the best day. The session is fun, it moves fast, and by the time it's over she is going to be texting her friends from the car. I promise.
And if she wants to bring her dog for part of it? Yes. Bring the dog. Sheldon was a very good boy and those images are some of the most shareable in the whole gallery. Just let me know during planning so we can build it into the timeline.
Quarry Trails is one of my favorite locations in all of Central Ohio and Riya's session is exactly why. If you've been scrolling and everything looks the same, come see what a session planned around your specific senior actually looks like.
I only take a limited number of seniors each year and spots fill fast, especially in summer and fall. If your senior is rising, now is the right time to reach out.

Where is Quarry Trails Metro Park and why is it good for senior portraits? Quarry Trails Metro Park is on the west side of Columbus Ohio off Trabue Road. It's a former quarry converted into a Metro Park, and the old quarry walls, natural waterfall, and surrounding wildflower meadows make it one of the most visually interesting senior portrait locations in the city. The variety within the park means completely different backdrops without ever leaving. I've been shooting there for years and it consistently produces some of my favorite images.
Can I do part of my senior session at Quarry Trails and part somewhere else? Typically sessions are held in one location, but as you can see it's always a location that will give us a ton of variety and looks. Riya's session started at Quarry Trails and finished in the small urban section of the park so it gave her so much variety that paired well with her looks. That combination gave her a gallery with two completely different looks and energies. During our planning session we figure out which location makes the most sense for your senior and how to structure the day to get the most out of it.
Can I bring my dog to my senior portrait session? Yes! Just plan for it. The key is timing it so your dog is fresh and happy for their portion and then can head home or rest while we finish. Sheldon was a total star. Let me know during planning and we will build it in.
What should I wear for senior portraits at Quarry Trails? Quarry Trails works with everything from flowy dresses to casual everyday looks. Softer colors photograph beautifully against the stone and wildflowers. If you're combining the park with a downtown location like Riya did, you can go more editorial for that portion and the contrast is really fun. I go through all of this during our planning session so nothing is a guessing game.
How far in advance should I book senior portraits in Columbus? For summer sessions, reach out by late spring at the latest. My calendar fills faster than most people expect and I keep my volume intentionally limited. Fall books through word of mouth before it's even announced most years. If you have a season or location in mind, earlier is always better.
