Okay, I have to tell you about Tyler's session because it was genuinely one of the most fun nights I've had in a long time.
We started near the Ohio Statehouse, worked our way through the Arena District, did some incredible night shots along High Street, and then I looked up at the sky over the Scioto River and my brain just went: nope, we are not done yet.
The sunset was happening. Like, really happening. And we were not close to the Main Street Bridge.
So we ran. Tyler, his mom, me, all the gear, everyone just sprinting across downtown Columbus trying to beat the sun. Laughing the whole way. We made it with maybe two minutes to spare and the images from that bridge are some of my favorites from any session, ever. More on that in a sec.
But first: senior pictures for guys in downtown Columbus are something I could honestly shoot every single week and never get tired of. Here's why this session worked so well, and why it might be exactly what you're looking for too.
Can you do senior pictures for guys in downtown Columbus, Ohio? Yes, and it might be the best call you make for your son's session. The area around the Ohio Statehouse, the Arena District, and the Main Street Bridge over the Scioto River give you more variety than most suburban locations can offer in a full session. Downtown Columbus senior portraits tend to feel more editorial and current, which guys actually love, even the ones who showed up skeptical.
Look, I'm going to be honest with you. Most of the guys I shoot are doing this for their mom. They're not walking in thinking "I can't wait for my senior portraits." They're walking in because she asked, and they love her, and here we are.
Tyler was not that guy. He showed up ready, styled, and genuinely up for whatever. But even when I work with seniors who are a little less enthusiastic, downtown Columbus has this way of making the whole thing feel less like a photo session and more like just hanging out in the city. There's always something to lean against, something to look at, somewhere to walk. The city gives guys a reason to move naturally, and that's when you get the real shots.
The ornate iron fencing and stone steps near the Statehouse. The warm globe lights along the building walls in the Arena District. The wide open brick plazas. All of it photographs beautifully and none of it feels like a "senior photo backdrop." That matters a lot when you're working with a 17-year-old who would rather be anywhere else.
Tyler came prepared and it showed immediately. He had multiple looks ranging from a cream linen suit to a casual denim jacket, and every single one of them worked for the locations we were shooting.
Near the Statehouse, he wore a light blue button-down with khaki pants and a brown belt. That classic combination is genuinely hard to mess up downtown because it reads polished and clean against all that stone architecture without looking stiff or over-dressed. He also shot part of this section in the cream suit with a pocket square, which I was not expecting, and it was absolutely stunning against the purple and white flower beds in the plaza.
In the Arena District, he switched into a teal blue sweater over a black tee with dark pants. Completely different energy. More relaxed, more city, and the way the globe lights behind him glowed in those shots? Really something.
For the night portion along High Street, he went casual in a light denim jacket over a white tee and gray pants with Vans. That look was made for the city lights and the dusk sky and the whole vibe of that part of the session.
The takeaway here: bring more looks than you think you need. Tyler had a range from dressed up to completely casual and because of that, he walked away with portraits that work for graduation announcements, for framing, for Instagram, for everything.
We started at the Ohio Statehouse grounds, which has some of the most underrated variety of any location in Columbus. Iron fencing, stone steps, big beautiful garden beds, wide open pathways, and architecture that gives every image real texture and depth. We knocked out two full looks there before moving into the Arena District.
The Arena District gave us a completely different feel. More contemporary, more urban. We used the building facades, the streetscape, the globe lights, the brick sidewalks and open plazas. The blue sweater look was absolutely made for that neighborhood.
Then we moved into the night shots along High Street as the city lights started coming on. There is a magic that happens downtown Columbus right at dusk when everything starts glowing and the sky goes purple-pink behind the buildings. Tyler in his denim jacket against all of that was exactly the kind of image I love making.
And then I looked at the sky.
The Scioto River was maybe a half mile away and the sunset was peaking and I knew if we didn't move immediately it was going to be gone. I looked at Tyler. I looked at his mom. And I said something like "okay we need to go right now."
We ran. All of us. Gear bags and camera equipment and three people who had already been shooting for two hours just absolutely hauling it across downtown Columbus to get to the Main Street Bridge in time. His mom was a trooper. Tyler thought it was hilarious. I was trying to do math in my head about whether we were going to make it.
We made it.
The cable arch of the bridge framing Tyler against that burning orange sky. The Scioto River below us. The whole city going quiet for about ten minutes while the light did whatever it wanted. Those images are the ones that make me stop every time I scroll past them. The fact that we almost missed it makes them even better.
The best sessions have a little bit of room to breathe and go somewhere unexpected. We had a plan, we executed the plan, and then we threw the plan out and ran toward a sunset. That flexibility is part of what I build into every session so that when something like that happens, we can actually go for it instead of scrambling.
For guys especially: give yourself multiple outfit options from casual to dressed up, pick a location that has real variety built in (downtown Columbus checks every box for this), and trust the process. Tyler walked in stylish and confident and walked out with a gallery that could honestly be in a magazine. Your son can have that too.
If you've been scrolling for a while looking for something that actually looks different, I hope Tyler's session gave you what you were looking for. This is what I do for every senior, not just the confident ones, not just the stylish ones. Every single one of them.
I shoot senior portraits in Columbus, Dublin, Powell, Hilliard, and across Central Ohio, and I only take a limited number of sessions each year. Summer fills up faster than most people expect.
If your son is a rising senior, right now is exactly the right time to reach out. Let's make something he'll actually be glad exists.

It's honestly one of my favorites for guys specifically. The architecture near the Ohio Statehouse and in the Arena District gives them something to interact with naturally, which takes all the awkwardness out of posing. The city backdrop photographs in a way that feels current and editorial rather than like a typical senior portrait backdrop. And because there's so much variety within walking distance, you can get five or six completely different looks without ever getting in a car.
I hear this from so many moms and I promise you it is not a problem. Most of the guys I photograph are doing this for their mom. They're not walking in pumped up about it. But downtown Columbus has a way of making the whole thing feel less like a photo session and more like just hanging out in the city, and once we get going, the energy shifts pretty fast. By the end of the session, most guys are genuinely having a good time. Tyler was already enthusiastic, but I've had plenty of skeptics walk out completely converted.
I recommend at least two or three looks that range from casual to a little more dressed up but staying close to his natural style and elevating a bit, will give the best images. We'll plan all of this together at your planning session and we'll make sure we stay true to him. Downtown Columbus handles both really well. A clean button-down or blazer looks great against the Statehouse architecture. A sweater or casual jacket works beautifully for the Arena District and the night shots. And a relaxed casual look for the dusk and evening portion of the session is always a good call. The more range you bring, the more variety you'll have when it's time to choose what to order. I go over all of this during our planning session before you ever show up.
Senior Guy sessions are typically about 90 minutes but in locations like this that are a bit more expansive and spread out, allow for a bit more time to navigate the area. . Downtown sessions tend to run on the longer side because there's so much to work with in a small area. And sometimes, like Tyler's session, something unexpected happens like a once-in-a-season sunset over the Scioto River and you just go for it. Those are usually the moments that make the whole session.
Yes, all over Central Ohio. I shoot in Dublin, Powell, Hilliard, Westerville, Upper Arlington, New Albany, and across the Columbus metro. I also love Quarry Trails Metro Park and Highbanks Metro Park for seniors who want something more natural and outdoorsy. During our planning session we figure out which location actually fits your senior so the whole thing feels intentional, not generic.
