If the thought of stepping in front of a camera makes you feel tense or awkward, you’re not alone. Most people, even the most photogenic ones, feel a little camera shy at first. The good news is that looking natural in photos is a skill you can learn, and with the right photographer, it can actually feel easy. As a Columbus Ohio photographer who works with all personality types, from the ultra-outgoing to the super-introverted, I’ve seen how a few simple mindset shifts and posing tricks can make a huge difference.
Our brains are wired to overthink when a lens is pointed at us. We worry about where our hands go, whether our smile looks fake, or if we are posing wrong. That is why your photographer’s job is not just to click the shutter, it is to help you feel completely at ease.
If you are still looking for the right location for your next session, or any other info for Senior photos in Columbus, check out my guide to everything you need to know senior portrait tips!
Here are some tried-and-true methods I use during sessions in Columbus to help clients forget the camera is even there:
Many of my most photogenic clients started by telling me they were “terrible at taking pictures.” What they really meant is that they had never been guided in a way that felt authentic to them. When your photographer takes the time to understand your personality, whether you are a quiet thinker or the life of the party, they can tailor the session so it feels like you.
This is especially true for high school senior guys in Columbus who do not want to spend hours posing. We keep it low pressure, fast moving, and tailored to your vibe. Think more “hanging out” and less “photo shoot.” For more ideas, read what to wear for senior photos.
To set yourself up for success:
How do I stop my smile from looking forced?
Think about a happy memory or someone who makes you laugh. Smiles are more believable when connected to a feeling.
Should I practice poses before my session?
Lightly, if you want, but your photographer will guide you so you do not look stiff.
What if I really do not like how I look in pictures?
That is exactly why choosing the right photographer matters. My job is to help you see yourself in a new, more flattering light. You can learn more in my post about why professional photography is worth it.
You'd never know it by seeing the finished result, but most of my clients tell me during their consult that they have always been “terrible at photos,” but they ended up loving their gallery when I showed them the final images.
If you have been avoiding the camera because you think you are not photogenic, I would love to show you just how effortless and fun it can be. My Columbus sessions are relaxed, personal, and tailored entirely to you. Dates are limited, so let’s chat about making your next photo your favorite yet.
