How To Choose The Right Setting For Branding Photos That Actually Sell

How to Choose the Right Setting for Brand Photos That Actually Sell

If you are planning brand photos and wondering whether to shoot in a studio or on location, the best choice depends on the story you want your images to tell. The right setting should reflect your personality, your business, and how you want clients to feel when they see your photos. Many professionals in Columbus Ohio and Central Ohio benefit from using both studio and lifestyle settings to create a versatile set of images for their brand.

The Location Question Everyone Overthinks

Here's a question I get a lot: "Where should we shoot?"

And honestly? It's one of the most fun parts of the planning process. But it's also one of the most overthought.

Some clients come to me convinced they need a specific backdrop to look "professional." Others assume that shooting in a studio means stiff, boring, corporate-looking photos. And some just have no idea where to start.

The truth is, the right setting isn't about following a formula. It's about telling your story in a way that feels real and true to who you are.

Your Location Should Work For You, Not Against You

I worked with a client who was running for political office. His session needed to do two things at once: show that he was credible and serious, and show that he was a real, approachable person with a genuine personality.

We shot both in studio and on location. The studio gave him that clean, polished headshot. The kind that signals professionalism and earns trust quickly. But the on-location shots? Those told the rest of the story. The casual energy, the real smile, the version of him that voters could actually connect with.

Neither setting was "better." Both were necessary. And that's the point.

What I Actually Look for When Choosing a Setting

Be True to Yourself, Even If It Breaks the Rules

This is my number one piece of advice and I'll stand by it every time. You don't have to do what everyone else is doing. If the standard backdrop doesn't feel like you, skip it.

It's okay to stand out. Actually, it's better.

Your brand photos should look like your brand, not a copy of someone else's.

Think About What You Want People to Feel

Before you pick a location, ask yourself: what do I want someone to feel when they see these images?

  • Professional and polished? Studio might be the move.
  • Warm and approachable? An outdoor or lifestyle setting could hit differently.
  • Bold and editorial? We can get creative with both.

The feeling comes first. The location follows.

Studio Doesn't Have to Mean Boring

This one is big, and I really wish more people knew it before they came in.

Studio sessions are not stiff by default. The location doesn't determine the energy. The posing does. A great pose, a little movement, and the right direction from your photographer can turn a simple studio backdrop into something dynamic and alive.

Don't write off the studio just because you've seen flat, lifeless headshots before. That's a posing problem, not a location problem.

Professionals across Dublin Ohio and Columbus Ohio often choose studio sessions because they provide clean, consistent images that work well for websites, speaking bios, LinkedIn profiles, and press features.

On Location Adds Personality, But It Needs Intention

Shooting outside or in a real-world space can add warmth and context to your brand. But "outside" isn't a strategy on its own.

Think about:

  • What does this place say about who you are?
  • Does it reflect your industry or your personality?
  • Will it look timeless, or will it feel dated in two years?

Location should add to your story, not distract from it.

For many business owners in Central Ohio, thoughtful on-location brand photos help show personality and approachability in ways a studio backdrop sometimes cannot.

You Can (And Sometimes Should) Do Both

Like my client running for office, sometimes one setting isn't enough. A mix of studio and on-location photos gives you versatility.

You end up with images that work across different platforms and different contexts without needing to schedule a new session every time.

This approach works especially well for professionals who want a mix of polished headshots and relaxed brand imagery for marketing, social media, and speaking opportunities.

Why This Actually Matters for Your Brand

Your brand photos are often the first impression someone gets of you.

They show up on your website, your social media, your email newsletters, your speaking bios, and sometimes even in press features or event promotions.

If the setting feels off or disconnected from who you are, people can sense it. It creates a subtle friction that makes it harder for them to trust you or connect with you.

But when your photos feel authentic, everything changes.

When the setting, the energy, and the person in the frame all line up, the images start working for you. They quietly communicate confidence, professionalism, and personality. Not in a pushy sales way, but in a natural "yes, I want to work with that person" way.

That is when brand photography really starts to do its job.
